Influences

What Writers Inspired Thomson Woods?

His deepest influence unquestionably stems through Kurt Vonnegut’s writing. Vonnegut’s classic, Cat’s Cradle and it’s unique religion, Bokononism, made a profound impact on how he viewed the philosophical depth of satirical writing.

Tom Robbins was also one of the first authors whose work he fell in love with. He once said that “My friends and family couldn’t get me to shut up about some of his books. I think I tried to get everyone in my house growing up to read Jitterbug Perfume.”

Thomson Woods was almost named after W. Somerset Maugham. So it’s no wonder that former British novelist left his mark on Thomson Woods. How far does the experimental and modernist literature influences of Maugham travel? Well, Thomson Woods even named one of his main protagonists after him in his book Idle Chaos.

Thomson Woods also cites other “more formal” authors as having influenced him, such as Terry Pratchett, Aldous Huxley, Albert Camus, and George Orwell.

When did he decide to become a writer?

Like many, Thomson Woods always wrote. As a kid, he’d look forward to essays and putting a creative spin on his school work. But he didn’t decide to seriously pursue writing until he was a young adult. The crippling oppression of cubicle life, bills, and adult responsibilities drew him back to those childhood ambitions.

Where does he get his ideas for books?

Many of the themes tackled in the novels by Thomson Woods are themes that he feels personally connected towards. Existentialism, the responsibilities of the human condition, how technology shapes society, the fulfillment and necessity of finding a purpose are all common themes often employed in his writing. Writing this book is a way for him to tackle those questions and ideas.

Personal Life

In the winter of 1990, Thomson Woods was born to two loving parents. They chose to keep him, despite his constant cries for attention and their approval throughout his infancy.

He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida where he was an International Baccalaureate graduate at one of the top prep schools in the nation. In 2009, the University of Florida made the mistake of admitting Mr. Woods into their prestigious university.

Thomson set out to prove the doubters wrong and soon made the most of his education at the Gainesville campus. While at UF, Thomson excelled in playing video games, sleeping a lot, and intramural sports.

After graduation from university and fielding several job offers from several internet based Fortune 500 companies, Thomson instead took a job at a local software education company, where he wrote and developed tech-based content.

After years of honing his craft, Thomson has since thrice left the stability of his job to pursue writing full-time. During one of his bouts of spontaneous employment, Thomson Woods became a public school teacher. This experience has since shaped many of his works and the themes he writes about.

Currently, Thomson Woods is a writer who believes that there is humor to be found in every situation, and he aims to continue his creative endeavors through novels, short stories, and freelance work.
